Message from President Michael D. Higgins to Community Gardens Ireland

Posted on: 26/04/2025

“Community gardens, allotments, neighbourhood plots, and shared growing spaces are not only places of cultivation, they also contribute in real and measurable ways to the United Nationals Sustainable Development Goals, advancing sustainability, social cohesion, health, and food security.”

“While it is heartening to see interest in community growing projects increase in recent years, it is a matter of some concern that Ireland currently offers one of the lowest levels of provision for allotments and community gardens in Europe.”

Community Gardens Ireland committee wish to thank President Higgins for giving the time to issue this letter.

This letter was read out at the Community Gardens Ireland Spring Gathering, which took place online at 11am on 26th April 2025. The gathering involved community growing networks from all over the island of Ireland, heard about a new policy for community growing to be enacted in Carlow, and discussed how community growers are being supported in the North.

This was another hugely successful event and we thank all presenters and attendees for giving their time today.
